The Chamba Rumaal (handkerchief) known as the “Needle Wonder” is made in square and rectangular shapes. The materials used still include muslin, khaddar (a thick cloth), fine charcoal or brush and knotless silk threads. Using double satin stitch for embroidery, both faces of the fabric are sewn together by a back and forth technique to maintain uniformity of the design on both faces of the handkerchief. After completing the embroidery, the fabric is stitched with a border of about 2 to 4 inches on all sides.Chamba Rumal is a traditional handicraft from the Chamba region in Himachal Pradesh, India. It’s an intricately embroidered handkerchief or square piece of fabric that is renowned for its beautiful designs, patterns, and storytelling.

Chamba Rumal is characterized by its:

Intricate embroidery: Using silk or cotton threads, artisans create intricate designs, often depicting mythological scenes, nature, and everyday life.

Vibrant colors: The rumals are known for their bright, vibrant colors, which add to their visual appeal.

Storytelling: Each rumal tells a story, whether it’s a mythological tale, a folk legend, or a scene from daily life.

Traditional designs: The embroidery patterns and designs are passed down through generations, making each rumal a unique piece of cultural heritage.
